Amanda Knox: THE stunned family of Meredith Kercher last night told of their “shock” and “devastation” after Amanda Knox was sensationally released from prison after an appeal court overturned her murder conviction.
Meredith’s heartbroken mum Arline, sister Stephanie and brother John, shook their heads in disbelief and hugged each other for comfort inside the court in Perugia, Italy.
And Meredith’s dad, John, said: "How could they ignore the evidence?
“There were 47 wounds on Meredith and two knives used. One person couldn’t possibly have done that.
“What happens now? Does that mean the police need to look for more killers?”
Mr Kercher said the prosecution intend to appeal to Italy’s Supreme Court against the ruling and argue for the original sentence to be upheld.
But by then Knox would be back in America, he feared.
“It would be extremely difficult to extradite her back to Itay,” said John.
“If there was any element of doubt, then you think it can go either way, but I thought there was such a body of evidence against them. It makes a mockery of the original trial.”
He told of his dismay as he watched the judge deliver the ruling on television back in his Coulsdon, Surrey, home.
“At first when the judge was giving his verdict I thought he was upholding the conviction and then when he said ‘Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito are freed’, I was in shock.
“It is absolutely ludicrous. How can they ignore all the other evidence. I thought the judge might play it safe and uphold the conviction but reduce the sentence. But this result is crazy.
“It makes a mockery of the original trial“Arline, Stephanie and Lyle who are in Italy will be shocked as well“We are all shocked, we could understand them reducing the sentence but completely freeing them, wow.”
